Web hosting is one of the hardest games on the Internet. It’s full of fly-by-nighters, scammers, and fraudsters. The margins are low, the costs in Australia are exorbitant, and high quality customer support is expected, yet rarely provided. The market is full of low-end resellers, mom and pop businesses, and ridiculously oversold hardware… It’s hard. And it’s even harder when you believe in doing things really well. Ethically, morally, and otherwise.

I walked down Elizabeth St with my good pal Marty in 2005, each with $2 in our pockets. We opened up a bank account under the name of Serversaurus. We deposited our $2, and started trading as a web host the next day. Our website had an ascii dinosaur, and a handful of basic plans. Marty built a billing system, and we handled things together with just a handful of customers. A year or two later, I sailed around the world for a few years, even managing support requests whenever I could from distant islands, while Marty held the fort. Customers never knew, and on one occasion, I even answered a mundane support ticket from one of the world’s most remote islands, two feet above sea level, via satellite.

I returned in early 2010, rebuilt Serversaurus from the ground up, and we hit it again, this time, hard and fast with a bunch of upfront capital to move into the cloud computing sector as quickly as possible. We built a cloud brand, hoisted Serversaurus onto our own virtualised infrastructure, built a new office, mounted a fancy PABX into our rack, redirected the 1300 numbers, and here we are. We love this stuff. I grew up with a FreeBSD & Slackware on my desktop. Marty helped push the first packets to and from Australia in the early 90′s at the University of Melbourne. We have really great infrastructure. We have a real office. Real phones, and real people. We answer support tickets from customers paying $3.95/month with as much enthusiasm as our higher paying customers. We carbon offset our hardware, donate 1% of our profit to charity, and tirelessly try to think of better ways do everything.

But you know what? We’re plagued by the fact that virtually no one knows about us. More is known about our large and awful competitors, made famous often through poor publicity than actually doing anything interesting… It’s frustrating being the good guys, hidden amongst the grind of our noisy neighbours. We’re in a poorly regarded, shark-infested industry, offering a really good, and really genuine product & service, drowned out by Google baiting, excessive SEO, and bidding monopolies on adword prices.

So after all this venting, I guess it’s time to just get one thing straight: There will be no giving up. The nice guys will preserver, win the girl, and go on to fame and glory. Ok, so that’s a bit of a stretch, but you get the gist – This is the first post of many, about how a small, but good company, slashed through head-high weeds, and created a sunny, reputable & happy patch on the Internet.
