Singlehanded Bass Strait crossing

In December of 2022 after two failed attempts which were thwarted by weather, I was finally able to set off aboard the 1936 26ft gaff rigged Couta boat Huia, on a voyage solo across Bass Strait. Departing from Geelong, we set sail and stopped in ports and anchorages along the way: Queenscliff, San Remo, Wilson’s Prom, Deal Island, Flinders Island, Wineglass Bay and eventually home through the Dunalley bridge into Norfolk Bay - a voyage totalling 13 days, sleeping on the cockpit floor in my swag, protected from the rain at anchor in a handmade oilskin cloth.

Huia was on display at the 2023 Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart. A full length written piece on this voyage will appear in my newsletter soon.
